American Express PDF to Excel: charge vs credit cards
American Express only delivers statements as PDFs. If you want the activity in Excel for expense reports or tax prep, the PDF has to be converted. Here is the workflow for charge cards and credit cards.
Why this is annoying (the manual way)
Open an Amex PDF, drag-select Activity, paste into Excel. On a Platinum charge card there is no balance column to anchor the data, so rows drift. Foreign currency lines like "EUR 42.50 @ 1.0832" sit under the USD amount and end up in their own data row. The Membership Rewards summary (points, not money) gets pulled in as if it were a transaction. Cleanup runs 15 to 25 minutes for a busy month.
The 30-second method with Bank2XL
Bank2XL is a Chrome extension. One drag, one click.
- Install Bank2XL from the Chrome Web Store at bank2xl.app
- Download the PDF from the Amex Online Services statements page
- Click the toolbar icon
- Drag the statement onto the drop zone
- Click "Convert to Excel" and download the .xlsx or .csv
Free during beta: 10 statements a day, no signup. A typical Amex PDF converts in 25 to 45 seconds.
What about Amex format quirks
Amex statements come in two distinct families, and several details inside each that confuse generic tools:
- Charge cards (Green, Gold, Platinum) have no running balance, since the balance pays in full each month. Activity is Date, Description, Amount only. Tools that expect a balance column misalign every row. Bank2XL detects charge cards and switches to the three-column layout.
- Credit cards (Blue Cash, Hilton, Delta SkyMiles, Cash Magnet) carry a running balance. Reverse polarity applies: purchases add to balance, payments subtract. Bank2XL handles polarity per card type.
- Foreign currency transactions print the converted USD line, then a sub-row with the original amount and conversion rate. Bank2XL keeps the USD in the main row and puts the original currency and rate in their own columns.
- Each transaction has a Reference code at the start of the line. It goes into a Reference column, not the description.
- "Pay Over Time" eligible transactions are flagged on charge cards. Bank2XL tags those rows so you can filter without re-reading the PDF.
- The Membership Rewards summary (Points Earned, Available Points) is points, not money. Bank2XL puts it in a Rewards section so it does not inflate spend totals.
When to use the alternatives
- Manual copy-paste. Fine for one statement, painful across a year of expense reports.
- Adobe Acrobat Pro Export to Excel. Workable on credit cards. Charge cards confuse the table detection because there is no balance column to anchor the grid.
- Template-based converters. Accurate on the layout they were tuned for. Amex tweaked the Platinum Activity section in 2024 and template tools needed updates. We work without per-bank rules, so layout changes do not break extraction.
FAQ
Is the upload secure? My statement has my full card number. The PDF goes to the extraction backend over HTTPS. We process files in memory, auto-delete within 24 hours, and you can opt out in Settings. Details at /data-retention.html. Card numbers are masked in the output by default, and we do not train AI on your content or share it.
Does it handle charge and credit cards? Yes. Charge cards (Green, Gold, Platinum) and credit cards (Blue Cash, Hilton, Delta, Cash Magnet) have different layouts. Bank2XL detects which it is and applies the right logic, including balance polarity for credit cards.
What about foreign currency and Membership Rewards? USD stays in the main row; original currency and conversion rate get their own columns. Rewards points go into a separate Rewards section so they do not inflate spend totals.
